![]() ![]() Henry has more color in his face in the Moto shot, while he looks paler in the S8 image. In other test shots versus the Galaxy S8, the Moto Z2 Force was a step or two behind, but not in a portrait I took of two colleagues. What the dual cameras don’t do is provide an optical zoom, which both the iPhone 7 Plus and OnePlus 5 offer. Same thing goes for a photo of the Flatiron Building, although the monochrome photo looked much drearier than the color version. A shot of I took of my pouting 9-year-old son looked downright artistic. On the plus side, the dual cameras also enable true black-and-white photos with no processing required, which can make for pretty dramatic results. By comparison, a photo of the same flower snapped by the iPhone 7 Plus exhibited a blur effect that was a more consistent throughout the frame. On the third try, the area to the top of the flower looked too blurry. I say “tries” because the Z2 Force had trouble making an orange daylily pop on the first two attempts instead, the flower itself got blurred. What can you do with the Z2 Force’s two lenses? For starters, there’s a depth-enabled mode that tries to mimic the Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus, focusing on the subject while blurring out the background. Moto Mods: Expanding a fun (but pricey) ecosystemĪs I snapped Moto Mods on and off the Z2 Force, I felt the same sort of glee I did as a kid playing with Transformers. To see the results of other smartphones, as well as our complete scoring methodology, check out our smartphone drop tests. This rugged phone ended up with a toughness score of 8.5 out of 10. After it dried out, though, it came back to life, with no apparent damage. Unfortunately, the Z2 isn’t waterproof the phone seemingly died a few seconds after taking a dunk in the toilet. The only physical signs of damage were tiny nicks on the bottom edge of its aluminum frame. The Z2’s ShatterShield display didn't break through all of our testing, including a 6-foot face drop onto concrete - something that caused damage to just about every other phone we’ve tested. We tested the toughness of the Motorola Z2 Force by dropping it on its face onto wood from a height of 4 feet and 6 feet we then dropped it on its edge and face onto concrete from 4 feet we then dropped it on its edge and face from 6 feet onto concrete finally, we dropped from 4 feet into a water-filled toilet. However, it’s not fully water-resistant like the Galaxy S8 or the LG G6, both of which can be submerged. This mod might not be worth its full $199 price tag, but if you like the novelty of printing photos straight from your phone and sticking them anywhere (thanks to its adhesive back), then Polaroid’s mod is worth considering. The Z2 Force can take a splash, as Motorola treated the handset with a water-repellent nanocoating. For example, hot pink and yellow registered as pastels. Darker tones showed up more accurately, while brighter colors appeared faded. ![]() All of the prints were undersaturated, though some filters were able to mitigate this. ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, when we tested this mod, our prints were a mixed bag. Link your social media accounts and add filters with the Polaroid Insta-Share app. Shoot images using Polaroid’s capture button or snap directly from your Moto Z's camera to produce 2 x 3-inch prints. At 6 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches, Polaroid's mod isn't as bulky as those old cameras, and it only adds 6.6 ounces to the weight of your phone when you attach the mod. Motorola's Polaroid Insta-Share Printer is a blast from the past, taking you back to the days when instant cameras churned out photos right after you pressed the shutter button. On a positive note, the Moto Smart Speaker makes it easier to listen to all your Amazon digital purchases for a great hands-free experience. While having Alexa available to answer queries was helpful, if you care about audio more so than having a virtual assistant, the JBL SoundBoost 2 is a better alternative for half the price. Playing music on the Moto Smart Speaker sounds tinny, and any song with bass lacked potency. The sound is loud enough to fill a small- to medium-sized room, but audio quality isn’t high enough to justify the price. When we used the Moto Smart Speaker, though, we found audio playback to be underwhelming. The mod promises up to 15 hours of battery life from its own built-in battery, so it's able to keep up with long-lasting phones like the Moto Z Play and Z2 Force. All the questions you'd ask at home can be fielded by your phone, and the speaker's four far-field microphones are sure to pick up any of your requests no matter how far away you are from your phone. The voice-powered Alexa assistant goes everywhere you do when you attach the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa onto your Moto Z. ![]()
